“Just as art online can be many things that art in a gallery usually cannot (interactive, global, evolving, user-generated), physical art has yet to work out what it can say about the online world that the online world cannot say about itself.” the economist

Penelope Umbrico’s giant array of photographs of people in front of sunsets was produced by searching for the tag “sunset” on the photo-sharing site, Flickr. It’s just one of the internet-inspired artworks in a New York exhibition entitled “Social Media”.

Creativity Explored

One of the most amazing experiences I’ve had over the last few weeks of vaca fun was at a place called Creativity Explored. This gallery/studio is based in the Mission in SF and is a working hall and exhibition place for mentally disabled adults in the SF area.  Each morning, the students actually come in and work + learn in the studio, and it’s open for the public to come explore.

The students are the sweetest - they’re so excited when people come to visit - and they love to brag and show-off their work. Emma followed me around the whole studio and showed me each piece of work she’d done. And others, more reserved, were still so honored that people would come in and show genuine interest in what they are doing.

I walked away with a few pieces of great art - work that will mean a lot to me each time I look at it. Here’s me with Hung, who blew me away with his abstract and detail oriented work. (You can see more of it here.)

And here’s me with Taneya. She didn’t have oral communication skills, but her smile was proof of her thanks for buying her little piece. (more here)

If you’re ever in the SF area, do stop by - it’s an experience bound to tug at your heart strings. And you’ll walk away with some great art, too!

keeping promises

it was only a promise to myself, but maybe that’s the most important kind (?). after some extra motivation that came in the form of perfect timing and a shopping list, i picked up my first batch of art supplies yesterday.

i gave my new hobby a quick first go, but mostly focused on mixing fun colors and dong a 3 year-old’s best version of lines…so you only get a peek at it! i guess it can only improve from here…

another reminder: try more new things.
